Oral Hygiene – Preventative Dentistry for Fresh Breath

smileTroubled by your breath? Have a good brushing habit but maintaining fresh breath is still a struggle? Everybody knows that keeping your teeth clean is important, but what many don’t know is that it is also often not enough, and it is very, very individual.

Our teeth get stained and covered in plaque over time, with the pace of this process increasing as we age. And we don’t mean the kind of residue that is easy to clean off with a simple tooth brush. Often a dental hygienist will have to remove bits of hard build-up from a tooth with a sharp tool. The thing about this build-up is that it is a hard but porous material that will absorb odours and serve as a nesting ground for bacteria. Unfortunately, no amount of brushing will help with that.

For instance, if you experience bad taste in your mouth, it may be a warning sign for gum disease, which can be caused caused by bacteria living in the plaque. This bacteria lead to caries, but also the formation of toxins, which irritate the gums. If gum disease is allowed to continue untreated, it can damage the gums and jawbone, leading to irreparable damage.

While it is true that this process of plaque build-up will be slower if a person brushes, flosses and rinses at least twice a day, but it is not stopped entirely and sooner or later you will need to see a hygienist. It is also true that one person will need it more often than another regardless of brushing habits, due to differences in age and other factors. Some people just have bad teeth, while others can effortlessly maintain radiant smiles. Genes play a role here too, of course.

So How Often Should I Go For Teeth Cleaning?

The answer to this is that you should have your teeth cleaned as often as your dentist or hygienist recommends you to do. And it really depends on the condition of your teeth. The average person should go and have their teeth cleaned once in three to four months, and we wouldn’t recommend to go without this beneficial procedure for more than six months, even if your teeth are in good condition. Because cleaning will help to keep your teeth this way.

Regular hygiene visits at Library District Dental will help maintain healthy teeth and gums. In addition to the cleaning, those appointments will give you the necessary monitoring that will help react to other problems while they are still manageable, such as hidden cavities and other unpleasant things.

What does Dental Cleaning Involve?

The hygienist will “scale” your teeth to remove the build-up and finish with a polish the surface, which will also remove some of the stains you may have collected in between visits. Another optional is a fluoride treatment that can help fight decay and some valuable advice on your brushing and flossing habits.
